Hence the term "New Labour". He gutted the Left wing of the party, cut union ties and courted the corporates and big business all in the name of making New Labour "Electable".
Worked like a charm, and even with his unpopular support for the invasion of Iraq he still looks a certainty to win the next election.
Meanwhile socialists and left wingers are left completely unrepresented as what used to be a very clear left / right divide between Labour and the Conservatives disappears as they both scramble for the Centre.
