They lied about WMD's to fix the intel.
They undercut efforts to search for weapons (which would expose their lie and expose their Treason.)
The truth got out anyway.
With nothing left to lose they outed Plame - but this too was Treason.
They were counting on Ashcroft to do a John Dean - he chickened out.
Fitz got appointed and they were screwed.
And nobody lived happily ever after.
