John Kerry on Enron Convictions
May 25th, 2006 @ 12:39 pm

As reported here earlier today, a federal jury convicted former Enron chairman Ken Lay of “each of the six counts with which he was charged” and also convicted his protege Jeffrey Skilling “of 19 of 28 counts, holding the top executives accountable for fraud on their watch.”

John Kerry issued the following statement on the Enron convictions:

“Unimaginable corporate greed hurt families, bankrupted life savings and destroyed lives.

“Kenneth Lay and Jeff Skilling will soon be behind bars for a very long time, but their victims must not be forgotten.

“For this to be a major accountability moment for corporate corruption and backroom insider deals, the way business is done in Washington must change too. Protecting workers’ pensions and shareholders’ investments must become a real priority in a city that too often has done too little to change a culture that allows the Ken Lays of the world to play by their own rules.”
