Edwards, Clark jockey for position in Virginia

RICHMOND--Nowhere are the shear forces on Democratic candidates more drastic than in Tuesday's Virginia primary. The state is a vexing mixture of old South and high-tech, NASCAR fans and the horse set, government workers and big-government haters.

Two people fainted and had to be carried out of a jam-packed ballroom at the Marriott, where a rally was being held for front-runner John Kerry, the senator from Massachusetts.

Kerry ended his stump speech by announcing, "Can someone please call 911?" after a supporter near the front of the room collapsed from the heat, excitement and lack of oxygen.

Kerry responded to concerns about gay marriage becoming an issue in the campaign. He accused the Republicans of manufacturing non-issues "to try to blur the real issues. I have news this time for George Bush and Karl Rove. I am not going to back down."
