70-plus rally for Obama volunteers

More than 70 local Barack Obama supporters rallied at a meeting Tuesday for grassroots volunteers who are backing the presidential candidate.

The Progressive Center, a local facility that houses other social and political events, hosted the gathering, which organizers said was designed to give Obama supporters a chance to meet and share volunteer strategies. Attorney Les Cassidy, Sylvia Samaniego and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi students organized the volunteers.

With organizers expecting about 30 attendees, people packed the center's first floor rooms, waving and shouting for television cameras. Cassidy, Samaniego and three representatives of Obama's national campaign briefed the crowd on the primary process in Texas.

"This is a grassroots campaign, and the things you do to get organized are the things that are going to win this campaign," Cassidy shouted from the front stairs to the houseful of people.

Kathleen Cook, a 38-year-old Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi student, said she heard about the event Monday and immediately decided to attend.

"I wanted to meet other Obama supporters," she said. "This has definitely exceeded my expectations."
