New ads attack Nethercutt's "extreme" conservative side

Tit for tat

By Jim Brunner
Seattle Times staff reporter

After getting battered in new ads over controversial comments about Osama bin Laden, Democratic U.S. Sen. Patty Murray has hit back at Republican opponent George Nethercutt with a trio of new ads that portray him as too conservative for Washington voters.

One of Murray's new ads is a direct response to the bin Laden ad, saying Nethercutt should be "ashamed" for using images of the terrorist and of the 9/11 attacks for political gain.

A second ad zeroes in on Nethercutt's anti-abortion stances. The third assails the Spokane congressman for votes against education funding, environmental regulations and a ban on "cop killer" bullets.

The theme of the new ads is clear, as each uses the word "extreme" to describe Nethercutt.
