The Hmong people were called "hill people" in Vietnam (western mountain ranges). During the Vietnam war, some U.S. military assholes "found them" and to their surprise they weren't part of the conflict!

Oh no, can't have that! So what did we do? We armed them and sent them into a war that, until they met the CIA, had no part of let alone any knowledge of what was going on.

Their greatest contribution to the "war effort" was that the Hmong became infamous for saving U.S. pilots shot down over SE Asia from ending up in the hands of the North Vietnamese.
