the LePore/Kashoggi connection. I simply stated that I did not know this before, and Madsen did not make clear where this info was coming from.

Your statement that I should try googling things myself actually strengthens the point I was making. Certainly, readers should not be expected to find out the source of every bit of info by having to search it out themselves rather than the reporter simply stating it.

Newspapers and most magazines do not footnote their reporting, but this is mainly due to space limitations and readability. Instead, it's contained within the article itself.

Madsen's article contains a wealth of information, and he weaves together a narrative from a number of sources (Curtis, past media reports, Madsen's own investigating, etc.). His writing sometimes leaves it unclear where a particular piece of info is coming from. His credibility would be enhanced if he would clarify his sourcing with footnotes and links.

The Wall Street Journal and Slate links show that this connection between LePore and Kashoggi is undoubtedly true. Madsen should have cited them, rather than just make a statement without providing any evidence for it and leaving the statement open to doubt.
