5. I don't think it matters if unused workgroup names

appear in My Network Places in XP.

Try right clicking My Computer, Properties and the Computer Name tab. You see Full Computer name, Workgoup name and a button to change. Make sure that the correct workgroup is selected or entered in this window.

(on edit) Make sure you reboot after change.
