I pretty much agree with Tindalos on this one; it isn't so much the size of the frame, but the color. The second one seems distracting to me, while the first one works because the frame helps accent the tones in that Spiegelau Crystal vase. If white backgrounds were allowed a choice of color for that frame style it could work very well, but might just overly complicate things.
Whatever it is should at least be uniform in size and, I would think, very minimalist.
ON EDIT: yeah...actually, I guess it IS the size of the frame...along with the other stuff I blurbled my way through.
*sigh* (considers option of drinking a cold one, or going to bed...maybe both, and not necessarily in the order mentioned)
