38. Sorry but that really isn't happening.
Lieberman must accomplish the following to win:

A: Get decent support from Republicans.

Ok this is simply not going to happen. To appeal to some of them he will have to embrace fetus and firearms crowd. Movements to the right to accomodate these people won't work very well and will alienate Dem's and Indep's.

Shlessinger isn't going to play dead, he had every intention of running against Joe when he thought he would be facing off with him in the general election. It is very rare that a candidate of one party stands up and throws support for another of a completely different party.

B: Win the Independents rather thoroughly.

Independents are NOT the media misconception of "Moderates" Presently Independents are rather against Bush and are blaming anyone that sides with him (thus all the crazy polls that point to Democrats being more trusted than Republicans and the public preference for Democrats.) Playing a sane version of Ross Perot's 'monkey-in-the-middle' will not win these guys over.

C: Take a sizable portion of the Democratic vote.

And wandering around the state and campaigning with Republicans is really the greatest way I know of to get liberal and moderate Democrats to back you. Sorry, but most Democrats are going to feel betrayed by this whole move. Their well of sympathy has dried up.

The numbers may seem to give Lieberman an edge for now but as he draws more and more on Republicans his lead will quickly disintegrate.
