on the misogyny issues frequently present on DU. One of the unfortunate aspects of DU--misogyny, racism, anti-semitism, atheistic intolerance, throw in some homophobia--I wish I didn't have to see such things on a progressive board, but...
I also agree that too many seem to have issues with strong women. I missed the Martha Stewart discussions here, but I'm sure they weren't pretty or fun to read on any level.
Maybe some hold someone like Oprah to higher standards than those guys(Coulter, Limbaugh, etc.). Maybe people expect more and/or better from her than to be her own personal cheerleader and corporate whore--because of where and what she comes from.
People make such a big deal about Oprah's "freebie" shows, I think they are called "Oprah's favorite things" where she gives her studio audience items she loves, for free. No one ever talks about HOW she does that. Many seem to think she comes out of her pocket and buys that stuff herself. I used to think this, too. But she doesn't.
The companies give her those items to give away, in exchange for the advertising it provides on her show. She in turn, gets a monetary kick back for "publicizing" the item on her show. She admitted as much on a show once. She stated there was an item she loved, but didn't use it in her goody bag because the company wasn't willing to "pay her" to use it. That made me feel sick. :(
Personally, I'd rather see her do more of the things you spoke of that would help our party and the country as a whole--but seeing her do giveaways so she can add to her vast fortune...:puke: All it does is add to the sickness in our country of mass consumerism and that is ugly to me. Is it Coulter evil? No. But it's a form of evil in my opinion, and a sickness that she is enabling. Maybe some feel the same and are reacting to that.
I was surprised to see her and her show go from this benevolent woman, intent on helping others and bringing attention to their life lessons to this slick celebrity name dropper, sharing all too much about her celebrity friends and their parties. She seems out of touch with the demographic that helped put her where she is today. Thats unfortunate, but ultimately, Oprah doesn't owe any of us anything at all. She's entitled to enjoy her celebrity (I just don't want to watch):eyes: She's merely human and Im sure has many of the same struggles the rest of us do--just on a bigger scale and a camera crew watching. :P
Hope you have a good day, too!
