were used in medieval dungeons. They can lead to lifelong crippling, as well as death, and the pain is extraordinary. I spent the entire decade of the 1980s reading Amnesty International case histories and writing letters to tin-pot dictators and such to try to stop some of this, including all the American-I'm-free outrage I could muster. What the fuck have we come to? Or has it always secretly been this way and now we're seeing it for the first time?

I feel so sad.
