That the motive for attack was the establishment of permanent military bases in the Middle East and the support of oppressive regimes (monarchies, basically) in the Middle East when it suits American interest, but is against the interest of the Muslim people. The Project For the New American Century (see LunaC's tag line), the ideology that took us to war in Iraq, is based on the idea that permanent military bases in the Middle East MUST be established for America to be the only dominant superpower of the 21st Century, and that regimes hostile to US interest must be removed from power. Osama may not know it by name, but the attack was a direct jab at PNAC.
