In balance, I think his positives will outweigh the negatives. I think Edwards would rather run as VP than be shut out of the ticket entirely, and even the "losing" ticket of 2004 can be used to advantage in 2008. Now that "swift boating" has become nearly synonymous with "baseless character assasination", and the electoral corruption of Ohio and Florida are becoming common knowledge, reminding voters of past tickets might not be a problem. And on Iraq, his out is to remind people that the administration "misinformed" congress as often as possible, and speak to the importance of honesty and forthright nonpartisan cooperation between the branches of government.

Don't get me wrong, your points are valid -- I think he'd rather be on top of the ticket, the 2004 race and Iraq are going to be issues for him in either slot. But I still think he's the best match for Gore, in this hypothetical scenario.
