Furthermore, the very methods Rove used that have given the Republicans such short term victory have screwed their party over the longer term.

I think the Democrats have been too "centrist" and conciliatory and downright accomodating, but Rove is no model to emulate. The only attribute of Rove that is worthwhile is dogged determination to win, but not the ugliness, dirty tricks and lack of ethics. Those are not the same thing.
