Why they were there is irrelevant to why he got arrested. So far the police chief, the union, and the officer in question regret nothing other than the assumptions made by yourself and others. Nothing has been reported about the officer's history to support a charge of racism, abuse of power, or incompetence.

The arrest certainly diffused Gates. If I'm near someone who yells and rants incessantly even after being warned by the police to stop, I hope they get arrested too. I've been in that situation and watched when the cops cuffed and stuffed a guy who wouldn't STFU and I fully supported them.

So far, just about the only thing that supports Gates' version of events is the word of Gates' himself. So I'll ask you. Other than Gates' word, what evidence do you have that supports your assertion that the cops acted stupidly?
