This is supposed to be a big secret of Fred Meyers...and I am sure a lot of other large corporation stores are doing the same dang thing. Fred Meyers is dumping it's pulled produce into the garbage and refusing to give it to the food banks while pretending to be such a good company for the community in public. I have even heard them claim they are helping the community food banks because of their plastic can they put out front for the customers to fill. I understand all that doesn't always make it to the food banks either. Their excuse for dumping their food in the garbage instead of sharing it is this : (overheard at a manager's meeting) that "if the employees found out the food was going to the food bank to help people, they MIGHT start pulling some produce out before it was too rotten or not as close to the expiration date and the company would lose money." (Never mind they can write off the food on their taxes...it would just be bad for the company to help the food banks I guess.) So, while the food banks in your community have nothing but a few rotten things for the people to pick over and bare shelves in a time of great need in America...tons of perfectly still usable food is rotting away in the bottom of Fred Meyer's garbage cans.
