97. my theory: it's how left-leaning/"polite" people display aggression on the internet.
on websites that have little to no rules, aggression is displayed by cursing, vulgarity, and outright abuse. on "polite forums" this abuse is not allowed, but the moderation of such has to come from a subjective source (if it's a program that searches for bad words, it quickly gets circumvented into a farce). thus, instead of displaying aggression overtly, it has to become subverted -- thus the development of passive aggressive behavior: tattling, nanny state creep in the declarations of boundaries, and hypersensitivity.

DU is a remarkable display in this sort of development, especially the finessing of rules skirting. repeated taunts that are barely permissible, deliberate twisting of words, and outright red herrings/false accusations in order to setup technical rules violations for their targets, its just about an art here. and it's just as bad as any aggressive display you can see on some less moderated site.
