traction is because there are not more like you out there. Without dissenting views, people think this is actually something to be taken seriously.

From my experience, about 1/3 of those who show up to such events are spectators, mainly wanting to see the situation for themselves, 65% are supporters and 2% are doing what you were doing, making a stand.

At a local "Town Hall Meeting", I asked questions, and my R Rep was confounded and couldn't answer...2 people in the audience got up and shouted that I was a "communist", 3 others told those two to be quiet and sit down...it often only takes one to make a stand...to get people to think.
