Testimony by Giuliani Indicates He Was Briefed on Kerik in ’00
By WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM

Rudolph W. Giuliani told a grand jury that his former chief investigator remembered having briefed him on some aspects of Bernard B. Kerik’s relationship with a company suspected of ties to organized crime before Mr. Kerik’s appointment as New York City police commissioner, according to court records.

Friday: Take Off Your Pants
It's casual Friday, and Sam's relaxing so much, he's even letting his back hair down. Give us a call, we're taking all comers, at 866-303-2270. In the first hour we'll welcome Joe Conason in studio, and after that, we'll host our very own Sam Seder Show Purity Ball. Bring the kiddies close to the radio transmitter, and we'll cleanse their souls. Or at least give them a good bath.

Firemen douse Rudy’s image as 9/11 hero
Union bid to halt White House run

<snip>

Behind the union’s attack lies the grief and anger of families who believe their loved ones need not have died that day and their conviction that some bodies would never have been recovered had Giuliani had his way.

Jim Riches, 29, had been helping to rescue office workers in the north tower when it collapsed. In the dust and debris, his fellow firefighters did not realise that the south tower had already crashed to the ground. Despite the terrifying noise, survivors say they thought only the top storeys had toppled. They never heard the order to evacuate. “My son could have had 30 minutes to escape,” Riches Sr said.

The firefighters were still using the antiquated “handie-talkie” radios that failed to work during the 1993 bombing of the twin towers, when Giuliani was also mayor. He not only failed to replace them, but also located the city’s new emergency command centre at the World Trade Center against the advice of key officials. It proved useless when it was most needed.

Lack of communication also meant that warnings from police helicopters about an imminent collapse failed to get through.

You’ll Never Look At Potholes The Same Way Again
By: Nicole Belle on Sunday, March 25th, 2007 at 4:15 PM - PDT

I think I might have to write a diet book based on blogging about Republicans, because this story has sure sickened me to the point of not eating again. Dear God, what would you say to the children of the victims of 9/11? "Daddy loved you very much and you can think of him every time we drive on West 64th to Amsterdam Drive"? It's just sickening.

Kansas City Star: (h/t Sisyphus Shrugged)

The pulverized remains of bodies from the World Trade Center disaster site were used by city workers to fill ruts and potholes, a city contractor says in a sworn affidavit filed Friday in Manhattan Federal Court.

Eric Beck says debris powders - known as fines - were put in a pothole-fill mixture by crews at the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island, N.Y., where more than 1.65 million tons of World Trade Center debris were deposited after the Sept. 11 attacks.

"I observed the New York City Department of Sanitation taking these fines from the conveyor belts of our machines, loading it onto tractors and using it to pave roads and fill in potholes, dips and ruts," Eric Beck said.

Beck was the senior supervisor for Taylor Recycling, a private contractor hired to sift through debris trucked to Fresh Kills after the trade center attacks. Before the arrival of Taylor's equipment at Fresh Kills in October 2001, the debris was sifted manually by workers using rakes and shovels.

Beck's affidavit was filed by lawyers for the families of Sept. 11 victims who are suing the city in hopes of creating a formal burial place for debris that they say contains human remains.

"It's devastating," Norman Siegel, an attorney representing the families, said of Beck's statement. "When the 9/11 families found about this, they were wiped out."

No wonder the FDNY wasn't too happy with Giuliani. What a way to honor our fallen heroes.

Giuliani foes see another side to his 9/11 activities
Critics try to mar his hero image and hobble candidacy by questioning moves.
By Peter Wallsten, Times Staff Writer
April 8, 2007

<snip>
Officials from a national firefighters union, along with some relatives of Sept. 11 victims, say they will publicly attack decisions Giuliani made as New York mayor before and after the terrorist strikes.

Among other complaints, they say that Giuliani failed to support modernized radios that might have spared the lives of more firefighters at the World Trade Center, and that he located the city's main emergency command center in the complex, even though it had been targeted by terrorists eight years earlier.

<snip>

In a separate matter, one of Giuliani's most prominent political rivals, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), is considering calling the former mayor to testify before a Senate committee on whether the government failed to shield recovery workers from the effects of polluted air after the attacks.

<snip>

The Fresh Kills lawsuit presents further complications for Giuliani. If the families fend off an attempt by city officials to dismiss the suit, Siegel, the lawyer, said he plans to question Giuliani on his post-9/11 decisions.

"Most Americans don't know that this was dumped in a garbage dump," Siegel said, referring to claims that human remains wound up in the landfill. "Who made that decision? He will have to answer questions under oath."

Firefighters Slam Giuliani: "The Disrespect That He Exhibited...Has Not Been Forgiven Or Forgotten"
NY DAILY NEWS | DAVID SALTONSTALL | March 9, 2007 12:11 PM

Rudy Giuliani never fails to cast firefighters as his heroes, but the nation's largest firefighters union all but declared war on him yesterday after he backed out of a forum for presidential hopefuls.

His withdrawal from the International Association of Fire Fighters forum exposed simmering tensions between the former mayor and city fire unions over his decision in November 2001 to limit FDNY personnel at Ground Zero.
