set a limit for yourself either by gallons or in dollars

I have a 13 gallon tank - I only fill it 1/2-way, it's enough to get me to work and back

my partner does the grocery shopping on friday after work - the stores we go to are closer to her work place so it saves a trip into "the city" on the weekends. I do the banking and other errands on friday's on the way home from work as I drive through our local town anyways to get home

plan your shopping and errands for the shortest routes and "bundle" them together

open a window in the car instead of using air conditioning if possible.
