City: Occupy Asheville must move
But council members waive fees

ASHEVILLE — Protesters inspired by the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations will now have to occupy a different part of the city.

Following concerns voiced by the state Department of Transportation, City Council directed protesters Tuesday to move a main camp from a parking lot under Interstate 240. No alternative site was offered.

Facing a full meeting room and an hour of public comment, council members voted 6-1 to end on

Friday the current agreement that has allowed Occupy Asheville protesters to stay in the lot off North Lexington Avenue without a permit.

Mayor Terry Bellamy, Vice Mayor Brownie Newman, and council members Jan Davis, Esther Manheimer, Bill Russell, Gordon Smith voted yes on the resolution. Councilman Cecil Bothwell voted no.
