New bishops' president wants to heal wounds from sex abuse crisis

WASHINGTON The new president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says he'll work to assure the public that church leaders are committed to protecting children from abuse by clergy.

Bishop William Skylstad (SKIL'-stad) of Spokane, Washington, says the bishops will build on the safeguards they put in place after June 2002. That was when they met in Dallas at the height of the molestation crisis. He also pledged to promote the healing of abuse victims.
