WP: Powell Says Iran Is Pursuing Bomb
Secretary Cites Evidence of Missile Effort

Thursday, November 18, 2004; Page A01

SANTIAGO, Chile, Nov. 17 -- The United States has intelligence that Iran is working to adapt missiles to deliver a nuclear weapon, further evidence that the Islamic republic is determined to acquire a nuclear bomb, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said Wednesday.

Separately, an Iranian opposition exile group charged in Paris that Iran is enriching uranium at a secret military facility unknown to U.N. weapons inspectors. Iran has denied seeking to build nuclear weapons.

"I have seen some information that would suggest that they have been actively working on delivery systems. . . . You don't have a weapon until you put it in something that can deliver a weapon," Powell told reporters traveling with him to Chile for an Asia-Pacific economic summit. "I'm not talking about uranium or fissile material or the warhead; I'm talking about what one does with a warhead."

Powell's comments came just three days after an agreement between Iran and three European countries -- Britain, France and Germany -- designed to limit Tehran's ability to divert its peaceful nuclear energy program for military use. The primary focus of the deal, accepted by Iran on Sunday and due to go into effect Nov. 22, is a stipulation that Iran indefinitely suspend its uranium enrichment program.

13. Maybe he can recycle his old UN Power point presentation
The Winnebago's of death can be relabeled as mobile nuclear missile labs, and we can use the same satellite photos pointing out "believed" weapons storage facilities because, after all, one facility in the desert looks like another, so no one would ever know the difference! And the audio clips of the guys telling each other to hide the "material" are great, because the quality of the tape was was so bad, nobody could really understand what was being said anyway! It would save us a ton of money, and besides Porter Goss at the CIA is busy purging the agency of experienced agents, so I'm sure he has nobody to send over there to check it out. Besides, who cares if Powell and the rest of them are wrong? It's not like they'll get in trouble or anything.

17. If Iran is developing a bomb, we have the invasion of Iraq to blame.
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 02:36 AM by Barkley
‘open your country to weapon inspectors and get invaded.’

The message from Iraq and North Korea to Iran and other countries is the way to escape Saddam Hussein's fate is to ‘get a nuclear bomb quickly, before the United States finds out about it.’

Let's see this missile evidence?

Iran is pursuing satellite launchers capability by using its ballistic missiles as rocket boosters.

Nothing illegal about it... that's how we got into space.

chimp and his cohorts are still in bed with Chalabi. The vacuum in Washington is still on. I would bet money that if one of us gave them "information" that we found WMD's in Iraq, they would buy it.

27. We have given countries in that region a lot of incentive to develop nukes
I mean, why should they respond to diplomatic entreaties or sanctions at this point? They're convinced that its the only way to prevent invasion.

31. Well, why wouldn't they?
The Iranians can simply look at the North Korea example. In addition, the US pulled out of the ABM treaty and other non-proliferation agreements. How can the Iranians, or any other nation, take the US seriously anymore?

Quite the example we're setting.

32. See, the thing is Mr. Powell
You also said that there were weapons in Iraq, hidden behind large groves of pine trees. As a result, hundreds of thousands are dead, and the weapons you said were there, well, they aren't there.

So why should I ever believe you again?

33. Wasn't there a thread on DU recently that reported an alliance or at least
talks between Iran, Germany France and Britain re the development of nukes? Could Powell's job be to pre-emt the EU from forming alliances with Iran?

If anyone can be directly blamed for the actions that Iran is now taking/developing re nukes, it is George the stupid, foreign policy jerk, Bush and his "axis of evil" pronouncement in the SOU speech, daring, essentially, the whole world to buck him, while asserting the mighty military power of the US,--on second thought, actually he thinks he is the US,and seeks to crush them all under his fascist boot. I think there is some manipulating going on behind the scenes.

Makes sense to me that any country named, would do all it can to develop weapons that would serve as a deterrant in order to protect itself.

35. PNAC - Is Iran the next nation on the list?
Syria? Can ANYONE believe anything this maladminstration says anymore, and especially Colonoscopy Powell or KindaSleezy Rice?

I DON'T THINK SO...We're ignoring N. Korea and in bed with Russia who are also developing and threatening w/ nukes.

But - Iran/Syria are next on the PNAC list so there we go...what a bunch of bu$hit...

SO, how long is Powell's nose now?
