Condoleezza Rice going into hospital for uterine surgery

WASHINGTON (AP) - Condoleezza Rice, nominated to be U.S. secretary of state, will have surgery at a Washington hospital Friday, a spokesman said.

Sean McCormack said Rice would remain overnight at the hospital and return to work the next day or so. Rice is having a uterine fibroid embolization, a procedure to block arteries that supply blood to fibroid tumours, he said. It does not involve cancer or a life-threatening condition, McCormack said.

and I would be surprised, no, SHOCKED if she makes it back to work in a day. The operation is done by essentially starving the fibroid of blood so that it INFARCTS, sometimes causing severe pain. If the fibroid(s) is/are large, she could be in for a rough recovery--it is a slow process, taking a year or more before the patient feels "halfway normal" but it beats getting them chopped out, only to grow back, or having them burnt out. The upside of the operation is that it is an alternative to hysterectomy, which was commonly prescribed for fibroids.

There is another operation where they stick a balloon up there and fill it with scalding hot water, but that only works if the fibroids are on the interior wall of the uterus.

The other option is a shot of Lupron (which tosses the patient into menopause, and there are a number of people who object to the use of the drug). This is not a good option with very large fibroids, because it takes a while for them to shrink due to natural hormone depletion and there is danger of them blowing up, basically, and requiring emergency hysterectomy. Also, if you are on hormone replacement this is contraindicated.

I think Six Feet Under did a scenario like this with Brenda's mother's fibroid exploding, requiring her to be rushed to hospital.

Condi's procedure is contraindicated for anyone wanting to the option to become pregnant.
