American Greetings Corp. notified employees at its Brooklyn headquarters Wednesday that the company will be cutting jobs in coming weeks.
In an internal memo stressing the need to tighten belts throughout the company, Chief Executive Zev Weiss and President Jeff Weiss declared an immediate hiring freeze and announced an organizational redesign that will mean elimination of an undisclosed number of jobs.
"We understand how deeply this will affect these associates, and so we are committed to making these changes quickly," the memo said. "Associates whose positions have been eliminated will be notified by Dec. 2. These associates will receive severance pay . . . as well as outplacement services."
American Greetings employs more than 2,000 people at its Brookyln campus, which includes administrative offices for its greeting card and other social expressions products, its creative studios and its new-media division, AG Interactive.
Steve Smith, vice president, treasurer and head of investor relations, said the company wants to study its supply chain to streamline how its products get to market.
