Clinton: Iraq war alienated US from world
LITTLE ROCK, United States (AFP) - Former president Bill Clinton (news - web sites) slammed the handling of the war in Iraq (news - web sites) by his successor George W. Bush, saying the conflict alienated the United States from the world.

"I supported giving the president the authority to take action against Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) if he did not cooperate with the UN inspectors or if he was found to have had weapons of mass destruction he wouldn't give up," Clinton, at the inauguration of his presidential library here, told ABC television.

"I did believe that the administration made a mistake going to war when they did, and that's what alienated the world. And most Americans still haven't focused on this," Clinton said.

Speaking on the same program, his wife, Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton (news - web sites) of New York, told ABC she planned to run for re-election in 2006.

8. Did believe? Why the past tense?
I wonder. I am a little weary of politicians after all that has happened. Some did NOT approve of giving Bush the idiot savant, freedom to lie some more. What were they, Mr. President? Un-American or stupid perhaps--less politically savvy or more intuitively true to what they saw and most certainly knew? They were clearly less naive than you, or Senator Clinton, or Senatory Kerry .

10. Unfortunately at the time his position might have counted, he was silent.
So were almost all of our party's leaders, including Kerry.

It was crystal clear at the time that Bush was booting the inspectors before they had finished their job and despite a lack of evidence.

It was obvious at the time that he was rushing to war because "our troops cannot be kept in readiness indefinitely."

Yet from the voices of strength and reason we heard nothing.

It was a deafening silence.

12. Well, duh!
But Clinton supported the war resolution, just as Kerry voted for it. At least Kucinich voted against it.
