Now that U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum has announced he is withdrawing his children from a cyber school, a school board member in Penn Hills, which has been picking up the tab, wants him to pay the district back.

Erin Vecchio, a school board member and chairman of the Penn Hills Democratic Party, said last night she expects the Republican senator to pay back the money used to educate five of his six children. Penn Hills pays the Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, a computer-based school in Midland that allows students to work from home, $38,000 a year to educate Santorum's children. The children have been enrolled in the cyber school the past four years.

Santorum announced last night that he and his wife, Karen, would withdraw their children from the cyber school and home school them, as they did before enrolling in the charter school.

"The school district has just informed us that, after reviewing our situation, only children who live in a community on a full-time basis are eligible to be educated in a public charter school program," Santorum said.

The Santorums own a house in Penn Hills but spend most of their time at a house in Leesburg, Va., outside Washington, D.C.

I would like to see just how often and how well ALL eight Santorums fit in that tiny house with their two renters. Unless, of course, they throw them out when they come home (??!!)

6. Not public schools
Santorum doesn't think enough of the public schools system to send his kids there. He's been having the public school system pay for his private school tuition. That's entirely different.

I don't know about the laws in PA, but here in New York when someone lies about residency to get their children into a school district where they don't live, it's a criminal charge, for which one would be subject to arrest. I think the charge is filing fraudulent documentation..

The point here and thing to hammer home is that the Santorum family willfully defrauded the school district and lied to the people of PA.

The Santorums lied to the people of PA. That's what to pound on.

And yes, dammit, they should have to pay back every damn penny of tuition money they stole from their school district.

The little background note to the story is fascinating: As if somehow the fact that the Santorums homeschooled and "saved" taxpayers $80,000 in tuition costs in the past gives the family permission to FILE FRAUDULENT DOCUMENTS AND STEAL MONEY FROM THE SCHOOL DISTRICT NOW.

8. Santorum home-schooling his kids?
The little Santorums will grow up believing that the earth is flat and is 40,000 years old. They'll encourage the government to monitor the sexual behavior of all people -- heterosexual, homosexual, self-gratification.

God, I'd hate be his kid.

11/16/04 - Rooney Demands Refund For Santorum's Cyber School Costs

PA Dem Chair Says Santorum “Robbing Pennsylvania Students” for Personal Gain

HARRISBURG, PA: After days of news reports detailing how Senator Rick Santorum has taken $100,000 in Pennsylvania taxpayer dollars for cyber-schooling his children, Rep. T.J. Rooney, Chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, today called on Santorum to refund Pennsylvania's children the taxpayer dollars he has taken from their education to put towards the education of his own children.

Santorum and his family live in Virginia.

Rooney said today, “Senator Santorum keeps going around trumpeting family values, trying to convince citizens that he is the voice for the Pennsylvania family. Now we learn that apparently Mr. Santorum believes that family values means taking from the children who need our help to pay huge bills for his own family, even though they don't live in Pennsylvania.”

According to the Associated Press, the Penn Hills School District in suburban Pittsburgh has spent $100,000 on the Internet-based education of Santorum's children since 2001-2002. Santorum purchased his two bedroom residence in the school district in 1997 for $87,800. His Leesburg, Virginia home was assessed at $757,000 this year.

“This is a classic case of the rich man's Robin Hood,” Rooney followed. “Mr. Santorum makes a generous salary and lives in a very expensive home in Virginia, but he didn't let that stop him from unfairly taking from the Pennsylvania students who need those school funds desperately.”
