Militant statement threatens to sabotage Iraq elections

DUBAI (AFP) - A statement posted on the website of Sunni Muslim militant group Ansar al-Sunna threatened to attack both candidates and voters in elections due to be held in Iraq in January.

"We will target anyone who dares to stand in these elections because they will be considered apostates," said the statement, whose authenticity could not be independently verified.

"We announce that the Mujahedeen will attack the polling stations which are heathen places."

It was the second time a statement in the name of Iraqi insurgents had threatened efforts to wreck the promised nationwide elections.

On November 12, a group calling itself the "Iraqi Resistance" threatened to attack polling stations across the country and harm anyone taking part.

"Voting centres will become the target of the soldiers of the message of God," said a statement handed out at mosques in Baghdad.
