Specter Wins Support for Chairmanship
By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Arlen Specter on Thursday won the backing of Senate Judiciary Committee (news - web sites) Republicans to be their new chairman, surviving complaints from abortion opponents after submitting an extraordinary statement underscoring his support for Bush judicial nominees.

"I have assured the president that I would give his nominees quick committee hearings and early committee votes," Specter said at a news conference during which outgoing chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said the panel's Republicans were unanimous in backing the Pennsylvania moderate.

The nine Judiciary Republicans agreed they would stand behind Specter in January's vote for chairman despite his statement after this month's elections that anti-abortion judges would have a difficult time gaining Senate confirmation, given Democratic opposition.

That comment infuriated abortion opponents, and Senate conservatives — during meetings arranged by GOP leadership — subjected Specter to an exceptional grilling on his views and intentions.

1. This is the first step in either ousting Spector, pacifying Spector,
blaming Spector (which also results in outsting Spector) or turning Spector. Spector is an idiot for taking this job and I bet he doesn't even see what's coming down the pike for him.

3. Believe it is the end of Spector...
don't think he will be able to hold his tongue for long. To use to spewing his drivel and if its not the mandated drivel then...

2. I guess Arlen agreed to rubber-stamp any nominations after his visit
with the administration's representatives Messrs. Ben Dover and C. Howitt Feels who delivered this personal message from the president "Smack! I'm W beeyaatch!".

4. Did Arlan think that the dogs of fascism
he released with his "magic bullet theory" would not come back to bite him?

History has shown that fascism devours everything in it's path. Did Arlen think he or this country would be spared by his deal with the devil?

Now he knows up front and in person that fascists ARE NEVER SATISFIED. The religo-fascist dogs of his making that are barking at him now are nothing compared to the dogs that are going to nip at his soul.

5. The Weasel is starting to feel like Trent Lott!
Remember Trent?

Trent is just now allowed to open his mouth in the Senate.

Arlen is on his way to becoming a very old back-bencher any day now.

The irony of it all is that Arlen was elected by so many right-wing PA voters.

Organized labor backed him because he was so influencial.

Guess the labor bosses will never learn!

6. Pennsylvania Moderates Are Furious At Him
He had a "come to Jesus" meeting with Bush and Robertson. Mullah Robertson said he now approved of Specter since he had been warned and heeded the warning. The wimp sold out. It is the end of him as a statesman.
