(Saudi) Prince pledges to aid Murdoch
Look who's coming to the defense of Murdoch ... those wacky Saudis.
http://news.ft.com/cms/s/942102ce-38ca-11d9-bc76-00000e2511c8.html

Prince al-Waleed bin Talal, the billionaire Saudi investor, has vowed to block any hostile takeover bid for News Corp, throwing his support behind Rupert Murdoch, chairman of the US media group.

Kingdom Holding Company, the prince's privately owned investment vehicle, has promised to convert its 3 per cent non-voting stake in News Corp worth about $1bn into voting stock and acquire additional shares in the event of a bid.

... Prince al-Waleed told the FT: “The idea is that if the need arises, we will act to keep News Corp independent under the leadership of Mr Murdoch and convert our stock to a voting stake and take whatever additional stake is needed.” He also supported Mr Murdoch's sons, Lachlan and James, who are deputy chief operating officer and chief executive of BSkyB respectively. “I want to be sure Mr Murdoch and his family and the directors understand I'm ready to assist.”

6. Kingdom Holdings also advertisers on CNN......
I think they have holdings in that company, too. I wonder how much GE stock they own?

Of course, their investments in the US are in the trillions....gotta invest all those petro-dollars somewhere.

I wonder if people realize what kind of national security risk SA presents with their financial influence on our country and the current administration?

7. My thoughts exactly..
Is our democracy being bought, or given away, bit by bit? Why do more people not understand what a problem it is to be dependent on other countries or financially indebted to them? I am baffled by the people who appear to be sitting around staring at their navels.

27. Totally agree.
If you were the Saudi Arabia royal family and you wanted to stage manage the radical fundies.....seems that OBL would be the ideal "bad guy". There is nothing impossible when trillions of $ are at stake.

Do we really know OBL? Except for the legend created by the MSM? Google "Tim Osman" for some interesting reading.....

5. Maybe Murdoch will change the News Organization to
FoxSaudi News Network. Does seem that the RW conservatives, corporate news, and the Saudi Royal Family share some very common agendas..... think again about that Iraq war...who benefitted in the ME? Why, Saudi Arabia, of course.

1) A major secular threat on their border is taken out.
2) US moves their military base out.
3) The US is now well entrenched in the neighborhood, providing a good deal of security for the House of Saud.
4) Iraqi oil is pretty well off the market, making Saudi product worth more.

Not bad for a country that birthed radical Islamic fundementalism and where 15/19 9/11 terrorists originated.

20. Someone should post this article over at FR............
Until that start to see who the real enemy is (and it ain't us), we are totally screwed as a country. Yeah, Rudi, didn't take the $10MM....big deal, that's pocket change for the Sauds. The real danger is them using Murdoch et al. as their proxy for us to do their business. We, as a country, are so squeezed between the SA financial investments and Israeli political influence.

I'd like to see us unilaterally pull out of the entire ME....then maybe they'd be forced to resolve the regional issues themselves.

The American people need to understand how the information they are getting is becoming more distorted to reflect the needs of the Saudi Royal family.

Sad to see how this great country has been sold down the oil spigot by Republican Big Oil interests. Is this what George HW Bush meant by the New World Order?

40. offshore havens

Maybe we should bone up on the dirty laundry business, we could all be on the Forbes most wealthy list!

Rupert, the Austrailian . . . In 1999 The Economist reported that Murdoch had made £1.4 billion ($2.1 billion) in profits over the previous 11 years but had paid no net corporation tax. It further reported, after examining what was available of the accounts, that Murdoch would normally have expected to pay about $350m tax: enough to "build seven new hospitals, 50 secondary schools or 300 primary schools". The article explained that the corporation's complex structure, international scope and use of offshore havens allowed News Corporation to avoid tax.
