AUSTIN -- Sen. John Whitmire on Friday erased all doubt that he will show up if a third special session is called to give Republicans the Senate quorum they need to pass a congressional redistricting plan.

"I intend to fight redistricting on the Senate floor. I will be here," said Whitmire, D-Houston, during a news conference in the Senate chamber.

Despite breaking ranks with his colleagues, Whitmire expressed solidarity with his fellow senators still boycotting in Albuquerque, N.M.

"They're there. I'm here. We are the Texas 11," Whitmire said

1. What does a tyrannosaurus, a stegosaurus, a coelophysis, and Whitmere...

have in common?

Answer: They're all DINOs.

Our only hope is that the Repukes can't agree on one redistricting plan.

2. He sold out, all right
Someone, or an exceptionally large amount of money, got to him.

His behavior and his explanations (as described in the article you linked) are completely bizarre.

10. He's trying to suck up some of the glory
...trying to cling to some of his FORMER bravery in doing what was right. What a low down sell out. It hinged on one unworthy man who let them all down. After ALL they've gone through.

4. And I thought Ken Armbrister was bad
Edited on Sat Sep-06-03 04:40 PM by sonias
This guy is even more delusional. He is a member of the pink tutu democrats, dems without spines. Ken is a DINO but this guy still thinks of himself as a real Democrat. I am so disappointed that it came down to this one guy. He'll go down in history as a big ass.

13. I'd sorta been figurin' that myself, David.
Thanks for the confirmation. I wonder if it took a nice fat cash advance in addition to the promise to let him keep his district for him to cozy up with the roachman.

14. He was a sellout Alright! Look at this
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/2085208

Whitmire has an of-counsel relationship with Locke Liddell & Sapp, a position he got after helping Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane Jr. get a bill through the Senate in 1997 that helped him get public dollars for a new baseball field, now called Minute Maid Park.

McLane's lobbyist bird-dogging the legislation was Robert Miller, a partner in the law firm who later became chairman of the Metropolitan Transit Authority.
Miller and Whitmire established a close bond, and after the session, Miller offered Whitmire the of-counsel relationship, which often is given to "rainmakers" whose main role is to attract business.

According to Texas Lawyer magazine, Locke Liddell earned more money for lobbying than any other law firm during the 2003 Legislature -- somewhere between $1.755 million and $3.155 million.
The firm helped Texans for Lawsuit Reform get damage caps on medical malpractice lawsuits and helped Houston's Lakewood Church get a property-tax exemption for its lease on the city-owned Compaq Center. Other clients include Shell Oil, Houston Community College System and Pioneer Natural Resources

Whitmire said the Democrats in Albuquerque developed a "hostage mentality" that promoted the cohesiveness of the group but also resulted in "mind control," which excluded individual decision making. One of the reasons he left, he said, was to escape that thought process so he could act on his own.

......Mind contol thats Tom Delay's Job! :bounce:

He is a Republican in Democrat clothes!

15. waste of time
"I intend to fight redistricting on the Senate floor. I will be here," said Whitmire, D-Houston, during a news conference in the Senate chamber.

And it won't do him a damn bit of good. He'll make a nice little speech for the cameras on the Senate floor, which will change nobody's mind and Republicans will then rubber stamp a new map. The end. Oh, but he stood on "principle".
