U.S. Commander: N. Korea May Sell Nukes
SEOUL, South Korea -- Impoverished North Korea might resort to selling weapons-grade plutonium to terrorists for much-needed cash, and that would be "disastrous for the world," the top U.S. military commander in South Korea said Friday.

Gen. Leon J. LaPorte said the communist state may have harvested plutonium from 8,000 spent nuclear rods, which experts say could yield enough material for several atomic bombs.

The North's intent was a mystery, but "from the military standpoint, they do have a capability that we must address," LaPorte said during a breakfast meeting of retired South Korean air force officers.
...
"And there is concern that North Korea, in its desire for hard currency, would sell weapons-grade plutonium to some terrorist organizations," LaPorte said. "That would be disastrous for the world."

LaPorte's comments come as nuclear talks with North Korea have broken down.

4. NK - Iran. If you don't think that the monkey,(ordered by his handlers),
will attack, you're completely lost touch with reality. Both need to be liberated and enjoy having amerikkkan style democracy jammmed down their throats. Big problem, though, both countries will fight and fight hard. Not that the prospect of massive casualties compared to the death/injury toll in Iraq will deter fuckhead and the neocons. Afterall, they and their's won't be doing any of the heavy lifting.

5. More crack intelligence information
or is that intelligence information on crack. We attacked Iraq because Saddam had a desire for WMD and might want to link up with terrorist groups. Which country is next on the American preemptive strike list.

13. Seriously, why would they sell weapons grade plutonium
They know that this is the only thing protecting them from invasion, so why would they sell it for a few million to terrorists. It is like saying a homeowner being threatened by bikers would sell his only ammunition for a few cigarettes.

15. Exactly
It is more likely that other powers would do so, especially should the US attempt further conquest of energy resources in Southwest Asia.

16. I don't think they would be selling all of it
The don't expect to have the same number of nukes as the US, but they can sell some of it to get hard currency. That will do several things for them. First, it will force the US to spend more time and resources on those who they sell to which will take some of the US's focus off of them. Second, it can be used as another bargaining chip in negotiations with the US, and third, it will generate income that will allow them to develop or acquire more plutonium, or the means to deliver a nuclear weapon. This will further strengthen their bargaining position.

18. This might make sense if they had very much plutonium
But we are being told that they only have enough plutonium or enriched uranium for a few bombs at best. They have other resources to sell for hard currency. I just don't believe they will be selling plutonium to terrorists, whom they wouldn't trust anyway, and who wouldn't be able to afford the kind of money that would make it worth NK's while.

I suspect if NK has (or gets) nuclear technology they will treat it as the supreme state secret that all nuclear powers have up until now (except maybe Pakistan, but that is another subject).

If they really have nukes and the means to deliver them, that is all the bargaining chips they need.

As for taking the U.S. focus off of nuclear proliferation, Bush has done a good job of that by tying up military and diplomatic assets in Iraq, which we now know was certainly no nuclear threat.
