Impending Change to Kill Fillibuster Rules Led by 700 Club

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uselections2004/comment/story/0,14259,1355381,00.html

Televangelical tentacles

TV evangelist Pat Robertson is threatening to mobilise millions of his Christian viewers and "de-liberalise" the US judiciary, writes Philip James.

Friday November 19, 2004

-snip-

This day formally marked the transformation of The 700 Club. No longer could it be viewed as an outlet of relevance only to the loony Christian right. Not only did it join the ranks of the mainstream media. In many ways it supplanted them. Suddenly, if you seriously wanted to take the pulse of America, you had to tune your TV to the news division of televangelism.

-snip-

The 700 Club has been operating under the radar of traditional journalistic scrutiny for over two decades. Anchored by Pat Robertson, he initially created it as a vehicle to promote his personal political ambitions. After his failed presidential bid in 1988, Robertson founded the Christian Coalition and embarked on an ambitious plan to influence the mainstream political agenda from the inside out.

He used The 700 Club as the marketing and political advocacy tool of this plan. The broadcast's focus is instructing viewers on how they could best lobby elected officials to enact the Christian right's agenda.

Robertson's show regularly has more viewers than CNN. And while the rest of the world wasn't watching he has been phenomenally successful in realising a three part blueprint to essentially take over all branches of the US Government.

CNN's promotional tagline may be "watch what happens next", but to really know what's about to unfold in today's America you need to switch on The 700 Club.

Excellent article...

This is truly scary...at some point We as brother in arms and spirit just have to fight for the unity of the original values or for something new....

The system is so old that it allows things no one planned for....

That's what the "moral values" argument should be about.

3. If they want to play politics, TAX THE BASTARDS.
Tax them, tax them, and tax them again. Tax them retroactively to the start of the so-called Moral Majority movement.

12. That means they're no longer a religious, but a political organization.

As such, they should be taxed accordingly.

We need to make sure this happens! I'm serious, folks!

5. From the same article -
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 02:17 AM by djmaddox1
Of the 52 freshman Republican congressman, who ended four decades of Democratic rule that year, 44 owed their election to the Christian coalition which endorsed them on The 700 Club. The coalition's scorecards, ranking candidates on issues from abortion to marriage and family were a regular feature of the broadcast, promoting hand-picked candidates and discrediting unfavourable ones.
---------------
These scorecards are total crap! They hand them out all the way down to local schoolboard races & it has nothing whatsoever to do w/being a good christian or a moral, good person. You don't even have to be a believer or attend church to get a preferred ranking on them. I know, my father was endorsed (every time he ran) for our local schoolboard ... & won because all the locals voted according to these scorecards. This was a man who didn't believe in god, church, religion or for that matter, kids! But he tailored his platform precisely to fit the scorecards & that's all it took. BTW - he also spent over 30 years in & out of prison (not jail - federal prison) & had a child removed from his home for sexual abuse. But he talked the right talk to suit the christian coalition. This crap being handed out @ moral majority is just that - it's more a power grab, & they don't care who helps row that boat as long as it's someone that agrees to vote their way!

7. Should change their name to the 666 Club
More accurate as to their true nature. This is scary, seems that since the Chimp won reelection, every religious extremist feels it is time to push their agenda. Fundie groups pushing into the political arena, religious groups tying to sanction their bigotry, destruction of evolution, erosion of abortion rights, gay rights, human rights. When will it all end? The dark ages are with us once again. Let ignorance reign free over the masses for the beast has risen.

11. Yes, it's one of the first steps into "Christo-Fascism" as coined by...
Mark Crispin Miller. I urge everyone who has not seen his "A Patriot Act" dvd to order it and show it to everyone. He covers the threats posed by the "Christian-Reich" very well, and is funny to boot (thought there isn't much to laugh about). Do you think they'd go as far as outlawing non Judeo-Christian faiths? I doubt it, though as a Buddhist I'm a bit concerned by this trend.

Dominionists Attacking the US Constitution

This article is the documented story of how a political religious movement called Dominionism gained control of the Republican Party, then took over Congress, then took over the White House, and now is sealing the conversion of America to a theocracy by taking over the American Judiciary. It’s the story of why and how "the wrath of God Almighty" will be unleashed against the middle class, against the poor, and against the elderly and sick of this nation by George W. Bush and his army of Republican Dominionist "rulers."

(If my sig quote is there, Scalia on the Divine Right of Kings trumping democracy.)

21. definitely the "666 Club"
The beast has risen, and I say TAX THE BASTARDS!

Tax these mofo's that don't believe in our democracy. They want to replace it with their rule as American Ayatollahs.

They're coming out now, because they think they have a mandate. Ha! I think they just have a(nother) stolen election. They serve the beast and their arrogance and ambition blinds them to that unpleasant fact.

TAX THIS LOBBY GROUP

9. How many times has the 700 club embraced the filibuster?
How many Clinton appointees and Democratic bills were blocked because supporters of Pat's 700 club feared the will of the majority?

join the 700 club..the RNC's holy stamp of approval..

13. Taxing them sounds good....

Is the 700 Club owned by the church? I would think that IT (the 700 Club Channell) pays taxes.

For sure they should not be tax exempt, or these churches if they are so politically active.

Religion dictating what society is allowed to do... they're really building a bridge to the 4th century.

Where is our modern-day Constantinople? I wanna live there - the decline and fall of the Republic is going to be an ugly wretched thing.

24. Tax-Exempt? Non-Profit?
Now here's an issue that curls my toenails.

Separation of church and state? It's a fairytale I tell ya. On my way to work for the last two months of this election I drove past two gigantic "One Man/One Woman" signs posted on church lawns. I mean, those signs were bigger than some people's garages. For freeway drivers like myself they were a daily, in-your-face statement of bigotry and fundamentalist hypocrisy.

I simply do not understand how this, and the 700 Club's endorsement of those candidates, manages to slip under the wire when it comes to conducting political activities as a tax-exempt organization.

Someone, please -- enlighten me. This garbage is infuriating.

25. This should be a wake up call to all liberals that what you treaure the
most is under a full scale and coordinated attack. Robertson and the other fundie ministers delivered unto us fuckhead for another 4 years. Robertson and his bunch of scum will be very politicaaly active now. His legal crew the ACLJ (American Center for Law and Justice)with Jay Sekulow is often at the center of church and statelegal issues yet few are aware of the connection.

Jwrry Falwell's University now has a law school to train attorney's to promote the right wing christian agenda. Where is our Progressive U?
