http://www.iht.com/articles/2004/11/19/news/iraq.html. Note: This report is coming from The New York Times, Reuters, Agence France-Presse.

It is opposed to what Yahoo is reporting (as of 8 minutes ago) about "four" headless bodies found. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20041120/wl_nm/iraq_mosul_bodies_dc&cid=574&ncid=1480

1. from your IHT link
In Mosul, some of the beheaded bodies found are thought to have been Iraqi soldiers killed for collaborating with Americans.

One witness said that two of the soldiers were surrounded in a public square and decapitated, and then the insurgents warned that anyone attempting to remove the bodies would be treated similarly.

is on the march I see... :(

<snip>

In Mosul, after reports that headless bodies were being found around the city, U.S. troops were not able to confirm the precise number of corpses. Last night, an official with the Army battalion that controls the most dangerous and insurgent-ridden portions of western Mosul said the beheaded bodies had not yet been recovered because of concerns they might be booby-trapped to trigger explosions.

2. Bush's folly is unraveling quickly now
As long as Americans stateside don't have to deal with it personally, what the hell do they care. They still have their double espresso 180 degree chai mocha latte grandes to help them forget about all that nastiness.

9. from the NYT online:
In Mosul, after reports that headless bodies were found, American troops were not able to confirm the precise number of dead bodies. On Friday night, an official with the Army battalion that controls the most insurgent-ridden parts of western Mosul said the beheaded bodies had not yet been recovered because of concerns they might be booby-trapped.

Some of the bodies are thought to be those of Iraqi soldiers killed for collaborating with Americans. A 35-year-old businessman, Senan Shukri, said he had seen the killing of two Iraqi soldiers who were surrounded in a square in Mosul and decapitated by insurgents, who warned that anyone trying to remove the bodies would be treated similarly. "The bodies are still on the street because they have threatened everybody not to come near them," he said.

The discovery of the bodies followed the posting of a statement on a Web site operated by the Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, claiming that two officers from the Iraqi National Guard had been publicly beheaded in Mosul. According to a translation by Reuters, the Internet posting said an Iraqi major and lieutenant "were both slaughtered in Mosul in front of a large group of people."

10. Thanks you. noticed two things:
One is that the story is buried in the international section. It was not straightforward for me to find it and had to use your link to guide me. Second is that the article does not specify the number of beheaded bodies. I don't see 12 beheaded bodies being reported.

12. Perhaps they have not found all of the bodies yet....
Confusion seems to reign rather than freedom in Iraq....

7. AFP- Nine Iraqi soldiers feared executed in bid to oust rebels from Mosul
MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) - The bodies of what are believed to be nine murdered Iraqi soldiers were found in central Mosul as US and Iraqi forces patrolled the city in a continuing bid to flush out insurgents.

The men, discovered in an industrial area not far from the scene of some of the worst clashes in Mosul, appeared to have been killed by a bullet to the head, an AFP correspondent said.

Four of the corpses were also badly burned, the correspondent said.

Senior Iraqi and US military sources said they probably belonged to an Iraqi army unit that had joined US troops for a massive onslaught against insurgents in the country's third-largest city.

15. This statement won't make recruitment any easier.
"Despite Saturday's grim discovery, Mosul Governor Duraid Kashmula insisted that the situation was under control and vowed to create a new police force after nearly 80 percent of his 5,000 police officers deserted in the November 11 attacks.

"We will replace all the deserters in the police force and hire new policemen that believe in their country and will stand up and defend and die for their country," he said."

More like die for Halliburton.

13. US military confirms: 9 Iraqi Soldiers Found Executed in Mosul
BAGHDAD, Iraq - The bodies of nine Iraqi soldiers, shot execution-style, were discovered in northern Mosul Saturday, the U.S. military said.

All nine had been shot in the back of the head and seven of them were decapitated, said Lt. Col. Paul Hastings of Task Force Olympia. The bodies were found in south-central Mosul off a major road about a mile from the Tigris River, he said.

U.S. troops made the grisly discovery after getting a tip from the Iraqi National Guard, he said.

The men, who were not in uniform, have been identified as part of the Iraqi regular army based at the al-Kisik military base, about 30 miles west of Mosul, near Tal Afar, he said.
