Rare Tape of WTC Attack Surfaces - Yahoo
<http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=716&e=3&u=/ap/20030906/ap_on_re_us/attacks_video>

snip> "NEW YORK - The only videotape known to have captured both planes slamming into the World Trade Center, and only the second image of the first strike, has surfaced on the eve of the second anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks"

" The footage, obtained by The New York Times, was taken by a Czech immigant construction worker whose son at one point came close to accidentally erasing the rare, chilling footage, the newspaper reported on its Web site Saturday.

Federal officials investigating the trade center collapse are trying to obtain a copy of the hourlong tape, which could cast light on the cause of the north tower's collapse by helping to determine factors including the exact speed at which the first plane traveled, The Times said. "

15. I just saw two shows on 9-11
one was on A&E the other night...seven days in sept. the other was on CNN just an hour or so ago.

The CNN show had video of the first plane. If the sound was real, you could also hear the enormous buzz as the plane flew into the city so low just before it hit the first tower.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems I also saw footage on the A&E show as well. That show featured different people who had video cameras on that day who took footage from many different places on that day.

Like I say, maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like I just saw various footage of the first tower attack.

And, yes, it is terribly sad to see those images and hear the people and know how that event has since been twisted into something ignoble by the Bush gang.

Also of interest... on the A&E show, they had footage of Clinton out among the people in the city in the immediate aftermath.

On the CNN show, not one mention was made of this, and the only political figures who were included were Republicans.

Fair and balanced and wholly without merit...

17. You're misremembering
seeing multiple videos of the first crash. There were many, many videos of the second, as by that time people had had a chance to grab their own cameras and start filming. But up until the story of this Czech guy, there has been one and only one capture of the first crash on tape.

As for the Clinton footage, all right I admit it that I did consider him as one of the "unsung heroes" of Sept 11 in my books and I probably would still take a sex rogue to a warmongering asshole any day.

Just showing the horror of that day will stir a
lot of people to back Bu$h.

At least that is what he hopes will happen.

Krongard described his role as that of a chief operating officer
and vowed to keep everyone focused. "If you ask me, 'What is your
one biggest priority?' it would be to do everything I can to
support our two basic missions here, operations and
intelligence," he said.

"If you don't worry about who gets the credit, you can
accomplish an awful lot."

18. Your quote below is certainly true,

"If you don't worry about who gets the credit, you can
accomplish an awful lot."
-------------------------------------------------------

I'm wondering about a sort of converse to that...something like
"It doesn't matter if you accomplish anything good as long as you get some credit..."

21. Link to the NY Times slideshow
Edited on Sat Sep-06-03 11:12 PM by VolcanoJen
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/07/nyregion/07TAPE.html

I just finished watching it, and the quality of the video of the first impact is extremely poor. In the first impact, The angle has the impacted tower (Tower 1?)just behind and to the right of Tower 2, with the towers obscured by a pedestrian bridge in the front of the shot. The plane appears only as a white blur which must be zoomed in on and pointed out by the NY Times slideshow to become noticeable. Since the quality is so poor and the video was shot from so far away, it is not nearly as descript nor terrifying as the only other existing video of the first impact, shot by the French filmakers. It is, indeed, a unique angle, however.

Again, using only still shots it's hard to tell, but the video of the second impact (Tower 2) is much clearer. It's shot from another unique angle, almost directly under the tower. It is much more terrifying than the first impact.

22. I saw the first plane hit live
From Chambers and Broadway, which was a pretty "damned good" view (about 4 blocks north, 4 blocks east of the North Tower). The fucking thing came in so fast that the time between first HEARING it come in, and the impact into the tower seemed like less than a second. I heard the roar and didn't even have time to think "WTF is THAT?" (it was loud as hell) before I heard (and saw) the crash.

The only image they have of it is the fireman training tape taken by the French brothers, and that was taken several blocks north of my location. I do have to say that the Frenchman had good instincts to follow the plane - if you watch the tape, you know it is unusual, since all the people in the picture turn to look at the aircraft when they hear the sound. It was loud - fucking low and goddamn zooooming. You could clearly distinguish, however, between the initial sound of the plane piercing the tower and the second sound of the exploision that ensued, like "boom-BOOOM!" though that must have only been a tiny fraction of a second apart.

Whenever I relate this memory, I have to also add a confession. After the initial shock of the blast (the HOLY FUCKING SHIT - did you see THAT!), I almost immediately became fixated not on the burning hole in the building, but on the thousands of documents floating peacefully in the wind. Since I work on confidential documents all day, the thought that hit my mind and kept hitting it was: "That's a fuck of a filing problem!" I've never been more ashamed of an involuntary thought in my life. When the job made us go to counseling, the psychologist told me I was just trying to normalize the event by grasping something concrete that I knew how to work on. Perhaps. I can think of other, more sinister explanations for the emergence of that thought, though....

25. Don't feel so bad
I'm sure a lot of people just marveled in the strange, sick beauty of it. Don't think I'm some sicko. I feel horrible for everyone who died or knew someone who died that day. It's almost like watching a tornado b/c you can't easily grasp that kind of destruction. You just couldn't keep your eyes off of it. Almost all I did was look at video of it for about 2 days. It was just so unreal at that point and you couldn't even comprehend how many people were vaporized, or how many died in the fires, or on the way down. It's a human reaction.

26. No need to feel bad about thinking first of the filing problem.
A structural engineer might have realized almost immediately that the buildings would collapse, but not the rest of us. What I kept on thinking about at first (aside from trying NOT to think too much about the people trapped on the upper floors who were doomed) was how difficult the rebuilding of the upper part of that building would be. When the second one was hit so much lower down, I simply figured that the second one would simply burn to the ground.

And the psychologist is absolutely right about how we try to normalize whatever happens. Many years ago when a co-worker died unexpectedly, my very first thought was of how my seniority would go up one notch. I'm not very proud of that thought, either.

28. We couldn't take it in
I also remember the strange rain of paper from the buildings.

I refused to believe that people were jumping out. My mind just couldn't accept that. I kept saying to my husband, "That's not people. No one would do that." He finally said, "They're jumping to keep from burning to death."

29. The thing about the jumping that got me
Only afterwards: they were coming out in crowds. Every account I've seen shows or talks about isolated jumpers, or at most the two people holding hands.

I saw - at one point, and I feel sure it was before the second plane hit, though my memories are obviously affected by the chaos - between 20 and 30 people come streaming out of the North Tower all at once. It was an unbelievable sight. Somebody has that on tape, but it's even more disturbing than one at a time.
