Latin Americans Back Cuba, Venezuela on Terror
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) - Used to hearing U.S. calls for support against Middle Eastern terrorism, Latin American leaders on Saturday added its own warning by condemning lesser-known terrorist acts against anti-American governments in their own region.

Cuba and Venezuela won the backing of their neighbors, many of whom have swung to the left in recent years, to censure terrorism in all its forms, not just attacks aimed at the United States.

It was a rare diplomatic victory for Cuba, which persuaded an Ibero-American summit in Costa Rica to denounce the pardon of four dissidents who tried to assassinate President Fidel Castro (news - web sites) in 2000.

Panama's outgoing President Mireya Moscoso released the four, jailed for their involvement in a failed bomb plot at a summit in Panama, just before leaving office in August.

1. OK then
So if you are against terrorism then you must also condemn the US sponsored variety...about time and how interesting that Bush is losing support even among the poorer nations and even in his own backyard.

4. So Bush wants the Americas to bomb...er...spray the poppy crop in
So America (again?)...has anyone heard if our troops are still spraying the crops in Afghanistan - or if they ever did spray? Possibly not - since the poppy business is booming there. Huh?

Perhaps rhetoric is going to stop working - outside this country.

5. here's the answer: Afghans Committed to Drug War But Against Spraying
KABUL (Reuters) - Responding to a U.N. report warning it risks becoming a narco-state after opium cultivation jumped to record levels, Afghanistan (news - web sites) said Friday the war on drugs was the top priority but it opposed aerial spraying of opium fields.

Afghan opium cultivation jumped 64 percent to a record 324,000 acres this year and drug exports account for more than 60 percent of the economy, the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime said Thursday.

It said opium, the raw material for heroin, was grown in all 32 provinces and 10 percent of the population, or 2.3 million people, were involved in a business worth $2.8 billion a year.

"The fear that Afghanistan might degenerate into a narco-state is slowly becoming a reality as corruption in the public sector, the die-hard ambition of local warlords, and the complicity of local investors are becoming a factor in Afghan life," said the office's executive director, Antonio Maria Costa.
