Quake shakes Costa Rica
Quake shakes Costa Rica

AP - A strong early-morning earthquake on Saturday jolted the Costa Rican capital, where leaders of 21 nations were gathered for the Ibero-American Summit.

<snip>

The US National Earthquake Information Centre said the 2:07 a.m. (3:07 a.m. EST, 0807 GMT) quake had a magnitude of 6.2 and was centered 48 kilometres (30 miles) south-southwest of San Jose.

None of the summit participants were hurt and no deaths were reported in the country due to falling objects or landslides, but Red Cross spokesman Daniel Venegas said three people had died of heart attacks and one of a quake-related motorcycle accident.

Known to have been in San Jose at the time of the quake were the king and presidents or prime ministers of Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Bolivia and Uruguay.

1. Maybe a way for god to say: wake the hell up!
There is a plague amongst us, and it's the great nation to the north.

2. Cartago must've got clobbered...again.
No wonder they relocated the Capitol.

Hope all is well.

3. Isn't Cartago East of San Jose?
Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles. Was there last summer.
Beautiful place.

5. Actually the quake was in Quepos, on the Pacific Coast...
it was felt strongly in the Central Valley including Cartago, but nothing really big happened here.

Quepos and Parrita were affected though, about 500 homes were damaged and a few roads and highways in the Pacific area were destroyed.

6. That would make sense.
When I saw the report, I was thinking it said 30km not 30 miles.
