Bush Aims for End to Ban on Canada Beef
SANTIAGO, Chile -- President Bush will start a process to lift a U.S. ban on Canadian beef imports, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin announced.

After meeting with Bush at the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, Martin said the president will ask the Office of Management and Budget to end a beef ban that resulted from the mad-cow scare and devastated the Canadian cattle industry.

Bush promised to make the request Monday, which would mark the start of a monthslong review process.
...
The U.S. budget office will review the administration's request and spend up to 90 days before deciding whether to approve it.

4. Not if he wants to get re-elected in the next year...
this is the same old crap, bush promises, Martin says rah-rah and squat happens. We need to find other markets for our products, it's as simple as that, imo.

11. Yes, I agree
We need to diversify our markets. Not only will we suffer when their economy goes down the toilet, but we have absolutely no leverage with them whatsoever and it's demeaning to constantly be ignored and/or abused by them in trade negotiations.

10. They will repeal the ban because of the mad cow reports.
For the longest time the US gov't keep denying that there ever were cases of the disease here in the states. Now they are popping up. The US beef industry has been taking a huge loss because of it. By importing Canadian beef, the US can make a huge profit on import tax, (oh yeah NAFTA, their are ways around that too) and pass along the extra money as subsidies to the cattle ranchers.
Until there is a limit to subsidies to the US Cattle ranches and Farmers, and they are forced to compete with the rest of the world, nothing will change and everything will be sweetheart deals.
This is just another way to for * to help his cattle buddies.

12. That ban has been in effect for a couple of years already
I am appalled at the price of beef in the markets. It never went down as prophesized when the mad cow scare was on. It is much higher since then! I saw a price of $15.95 /lb. on beef filet steaks the other day.
