13. Heard a long report this AM on what the locusts have done in

Mauritania, which way back in 2003, asked for help wi th pesticides, etc....But nothing happened. So they have TWO planes and the country is being overwhelmed. The BBC reporter followed families in the villages...they were trying to stomp the baby locusts to death but within two weeks, all crops were destroyed. The country has been in a long drought and this the first year they've had decent rains, but all for naught. The locust swarms go on for miles and miles. Villagers have gone to the capitol city, where there is no housing and no work.

All because the world couldn't give this poor country some pesticides when they knew this was coming....

Israel prepares for locust invasion

Israel is bracing for a possible invasion of biblical proportions: a swarm of voracious vegetarians. The Agriculture Ministry is on "locust alert" after sightings of the ravenous arthropods were spotted along the Mediterranean coast this week, especially south of Tel Aviv around Palmahim beach. Ministry experts visited there Thursday morning to assess the gravity of the situation and to plot a course of action.

Agricultural experts have been keeping a close eye on swarms of desert locusts, of the species Schistocerca gregaria, currently eating their way across northern Africa and already worrying Cyprus, where authorities have mobilized airplanes to battle the hungry hoppers with pesticide. Israel is prepared to do the same.

However, Chief Entomologist and head of the Department for Protection of Plants Service at the Agriculture Ministry, Zvi Klein, said the desert locust swarms ravaging Morocco are unlikely to reach Israel. "If there are no drastic changes we are not in danger," Klein said.

However, the Israeli daily Maariv recommended frying as the preferred means of locust preparation, and provided a recipe for a low-fat, high-protein, albeit somewhat salty snack. Locust wings, legs, and torsos are reportedly delicious, and a healthy diet.

Sounds like the same species, although I don't know if it is the same swarm.

I was in central Saskatchewan on a field school while in university in the mid-80's and the area we were in was infested by grasshoppers. It was a very weird experience. While walking down a country road each bootprint would have two or three hopper corpses, some from before, some you would have just killed by stepping on them. It was early fall, and the weather turned quite cool one day, so the hoppers went fairly dormant. We were doing seismic shots, and when a shot went off, whole fields would come alive in an instant, with thousands of hoppers jumping up simultaneously from the vibrations of the underground explosions. Quite a sight.
