Rumsfeld arrives in Afghanistan, attacks continue
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/ISL322536.htm

KABUL, Sept 7 (Reuters) - U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld visited Afghanistan on Sunday as Washington prepared to increase aid to a country where the central government is weak, warlordism is rife and the Taliban and its allies resurgent.

The Afghan government said on Sunday it had foiled a Taliban attack near the Pakistani border just hours before Rumsfeld arrived.

Scores of residents demonstrated in Kabul on Sunday against the presence of U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan and some, unhappy with Afghan President Hamid Karzai's failure to bring security to many parts of the country, called for the return of the Taliban.

Rumsfeld was meeting Karzai and the two leaders were scheduled to hold a televised briefing at 1200 GMT.

3. What the heck is Rummy doing over there anyway?
The situation isn't going to improve just because of his presence. This all could have been handled with a phone call.

Rummy: "How's it going Karzai, baby!"
Karzai: "It still sucks. I don't have any control over this place."
Rummy: "Okay, we'll see if we can get you a few extra bucks in aid."
Karzai: "Okay, boss."

4. A phone call...
...wouldn't have made for a good photo op. We've already got Shrub on the phone on 911 proclaiming, "I'm trying to stay out of harms way."

10. Rummy is trying to prop up Bush's war
He is trying to tell the American people that the press is wrong, things really are going well over there. I sense public mood has shifted and people feel lied to.
