Powell 'pushed out' by Bush for seeking to rein in Israel
Colin Powell, the outgoing US secretary of state, was given his marching orders after telling President George W Bush that he wanted greater power to confront Israel over the stalled Middle East peace process.
..........
Vice-president Dick Cheney and his fellow hardliner, John Bolton, an under-secretary of state to Mr Powell, are both understood to have lobbied Mr Bush to replace him.

They wanted to make Iran's alleged nuclear bomb aspirations and support for Islamic terror groups the foreign policy priority for the new administration and believed that Mr Powell would back away from a confrontational approach.

The two are frustrated that Britain, France and Germany are still seeking a diplomatic deal with Teheran rather than backing an immediate UN Security Council resolution condemning Iran and threatening sanctions.

5. Point taken; what I meant was that
Colon Bowel said this when he was flying out the door. Kind of like WetDiaper and "hold me back" when he knows the scuffle is over.

2. If this is true - I think that it serves Powell right that he is forced
out like a discarded raggedy doll. He should have had the gumption to do his honor some good by resigning on principle when he had the opportunity. Now they - neocons - let him know that his usefulness is long gone and he is no longer needed. What a tragic figure he now is!

7. Respect, or lack thereof, for Colin Powell
Prior to Colin Powell taking this position with GWB, I had high regard for him. I really saw him as a man of principle. Now I view him as nothing more than a politician. He will go along with an administration just to keep his job, or just to "play ball" with the other guys. He could have become a true bipartisian hero if he had stood up to the Bush administration and come out with the truth on Iraq. If needed, he could have resigned. He would have eventually have been lauded for his actions and would be in a perfect place to either run for the highest office if he wanted to, or certainly have the political capitol to make himself heard.

Instead he has shown himself to be soemone who will lie or at the most charitable way of viewing it, push forth information that is less than sure and state that there is "no doubt".

I believe history will end up judging him harshly.

11. Europe to the rescue?
These early moves by the UK, France and Germany might delay a US/Israeli adventure in Iran. But can they prevent it?

With Iraq proving no fun, GWB will soon need a new enemy. Iran looks to be in line, but if Europe runs enough interference, who is small and weak enough for Murrica to beat up?

12. Why did you expect Powell to act any differently?
He's always been a spineless weasel. A Republican House Person Of Color, to put it kindly. Think of the administrations with which he's been aligned, and, if that's not enough, think of this place:

My Lai.

Powell did everything he could to cover it up when it happened.

So, why did anyone ever think he had any kind of "greatness" about him? He whored to the most powerful bidder, at his country's expense.

He's the Anti-Patriot, and the sooner he's swept under history's doormat, the better.

And I hope he takes his egg-sucking son with him. Sorryass sycophant.

14. how come every
issue in this country eventually returns back to a foreign country that is totally dependent on us ? they guide our elected officials and the media. every election seems to revolve around support for them.
