Reid at pinnacle of Democratic Party : His religion doesn't square with...
His Politics

WASHINGTON - Political observers in Utah, where LDS can mean "least Democratic state," appreciate the irony of Nevada Sen. Harry Reid's selection as Senate minority leader last week.
Even in the U.S. Senate, it did not go unnoticed that now the most powerful elected Democrat in the country is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

snip...

Is Reid really the one who can lead beleaguered Democrats out of the political wilderness?
"He'll be a major player," says Reid's friend, former Nevada Sen. Richard Bryan. "He is decent, very talented, very focused, supremely organized and tough, very capable of pulling coalitions together. But, yes, he faces major challenges."

5. I've never heard him come out against gays ...
but then, I don't really understand the man, truly. He is quite the engigma to a Blue State, a Dem defending hard rock mining and gambling which means he also must defend the use of alcohol in casinos....

You gotta give him some credit for staying afloat as long as he has in such a conservative environment.

7. It fits his choices-L.D.S.: Blacks and disabled people were BAD angels.
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 05:54 PM by genius
The Mormon's believe that the only reason some individuals were created other than white and perfectly fit is that they were bad angels before they came here. There is a lot of bigotry in the Mormon Church against women, also.

This explains Reid's strong support for Bybee and Sutton, who seem to agree with him on these concepts of bigotry.

The reason I know this is because one of my relatives became a Mormon and there is no doubt in my ming that LDS is the most bigoted group on the face of Earth. The Mormons who follow this religion do not believe the bigotry is wrong. They think God simply set things up so that good angels would wind up one way and bad angels would wind up another way when they came to Earth.

8. Reid's Mormonism should not be an issue
should it? I mean does the Church or denomination an individual hails from define that person and his priorities? Has Reid stated he will not support privacy or equality because of his religion? It's not fair to criticize an individual just 'cause his religous denomination does not see eye-to-eye with everyone else's POV. The Catholic Church has a WHOOOOLE lot of positions that I disagree with, but I don't hold that against Ted Kennedy or John Kerry.

9. Sutton, like the Mormons, believes the disabled deserve no rights
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 06:24 PM by genius
Sutton's plan is to eliminate the Americans with Disabilities Act. That may be why Reid helped him get confirmed.

10. Maybe it shouldn't be, but it is--just as John Kerry's Catholicism
was a big issue.

14. FYI: Nevada Mormons generally HATE Reid
And most don't even realize he's LDS. At a local LDS church a few years back, they had one of those trunk-or-treat things where people set up cars in the parking lot and let the kids trick-or-treat. One of the rednecks had a bunch of pictures of liberal politicians -- Clinton, Reid -- interspersed with pictures of Hitler, Satan, et cet.

Reid's grandson said "Why do you have a picture of my grandpa hanging up there?"

He's also done a good job of separating his religion from his politics. Being Mormon in Nevada isn't the guaranteed path to power that it once was, but even then he kept it under wraps.
