A Central Ohio soldier died Sunday from injuries he suffered in Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.
Sgt. Michael C. O'Neill, 22, of Mansfield, was accidentally injured Wednesday at Bagram Air Field while preparing for combat operations, according to the government. He died in Landstuhl, Germany.
O'Neill was wounded when a grenade he was carrying was accidentally detonated during pre-combat preparations, according to the Army.
O'Neill, who graduated from Mansfield High School, was assigned to the Army's 3rd Battallion, 75th Ranger Regiment based in Fort Benning, Ga.
This was his third Operation Enduring Freedom deployment since 2002.
