NYT: Americans Show Clear Concerns on Bush Agenda
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/23/national/23poll.html?ei=5094&en=65f079e7e323f9ce&hp=&ex=1101186000&partner=homepage&pagewanted=print&position=

After enduring a brutally fought election campaign, Americans are optimistic about the next four years under President Bush, but have reservations about central elements of the second-term agenda he presented in defeating Senator John Kerry, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

At a time when the White House has portrayed Mr. Bush's 3.5-million-vote victory as a mandate, the poll found that Americans are at best ambivalent about Mr. Bush's plans to reshape Social Security, rewrite the tax code, cut taxes and appoint conservative judges to the bench. There is continuing disapproval of Mr. Bush's handling of the war in Iraq, with a plurality now saying it was a mistake to invade in the first place.

While Democrats, not surprisingly, were the staunchest opponents of many elements of Mr. Bush's second-term agenda, the concerns extended across party lines in some cases. Nearly two-thirds of all respondents - including 51 percent of Republicans - said it was more important to reduce deficits than to cut taxes, a central element of Mr. Bush's economic agenda.

<snip>

The poll found that 55 percent of Mr. Kerry's supporters said that Mr. Bush's supporters did not share their views and morals; 54 percent of Mr. Bush's voters said the same thing of those who voted for Mr. Kerry.

1. A little late for misgivings.
Sorry, I truly feel that anyone who voted for bush should be pleased when their draft notice appears in the mail, assuming they're not lining up at a recruitment office right fucking now.

9. draft notices don't show up in GOP mailboxes. If a wayward
one does, they get multiple deferments ("I had better things to do" Cheney)

29. Yes, that's what I thought.
These people who aren't sure about W's agenda should have done a bit of critical thinking three weeks ago when it mattered.

3. all the more reason to suspect they cheated
All the numbers seem to favor Democrats.

Americans now have a better opinion of the Democratic Party than of the Republican Party: 54 percent said they had a favorable view of Democrats, compared with 39 percent with an unfavorable view. By contrast, 49 percent have a favorable view of Republicans, compared with 46 percent holding an unfavorable one.

5. Who's the *moran* that wrote this?
They said "Americans are optimistic about the next four years under President Bush" ... but then say that "Americans are at best ambivalent" and there is "continuing disapproval of... the war in Iraq" and a plurality now says "it was a mistake to invade in the first place"? And nearly two-thirds said it was more important to reduce deficits than increase taxes? How the hell does that add up to "optimistic"?

Whores.

22. There was a specific question about optimism
"And even after this tense and vituperative campaign, 56 percent said they were generally optimistic about the next four years under Mr. Bush."

Note that the headline chosen was "Americans Show Clear Concerns on Bush Agenda". That's the main message the NYT is giving.

If there are whores here, then it's the American public.

"Americans are optimistic about the next four years"

but

"at best ambivalent about Mr. Bush's plans"
"disapproval of Mr. Bush's handling of the war in Iraq"

What the hell are people in this country smoking? How can they be ambivalent or outright disapprove of the guy but still be optimistic?

17. Cognitive dissonance
The clincher:

"Finally, in one bit of presumably good news for a party that is looking for it, Americans now have a better opinion of the Democratic Party than of the Republican Party: 54 percent said they had a favorable view of Democrats, compared with 39 percent with an unfavorable view. By contrast, 49 percent have a favorable view of Republicans, compared with 46 percent holding an unfavorable one."

16. US Majority says BUSH SUCKS
There is continuing disapproval of Mr. Bush's handling of the war in Iraq, with a plurality now saying it was a mistake to invade Baghdad the first place.

The poll reflected the electoral feat of the Bush campaign this year; He won despite the fact that many Americans disapprove of his handling of the economy, foreign affairs and the war in Iraq.

A majority of Americans continue to believe the country is going in the wrong direction...

And bush's current lousy 51% approval rating is his HIGHEST SINCE LAST MARCH. I think it'll also be his highest this entire term.

25. Too late, asshats
Maybe Americans should have spent a little more time reading up on issues and candidate positions, and spent a little less time wondering about which candidate would "be more fun to have a beer with".

Well, Righteous Man, the amazing new superhero of the slowly melting global economy is back in charge, and all the beer-focused voters now have four long years to enjoy what they voted for.

31. EARTH TO MAJORITY!
This is what you wanted- no do-overs!
A vote for bush includes his agenda! Just because you didn't pay attention to that little detail doesn't mean you are not responsible for what is about to go down over the next 4 years.
We desperately tried to warn you, and you wanted to hear none of it!
The next 4 years will be all of bushes doing- there is nobody left to blame, and when later generations look back on this dark time to come, I hope they heed the warnings!
