Kerry/Edwards officially back (need help with recount efforts!)
Kerry/Edwards Campaign Participates in Ohio Recount

Monday, November 22, 2004

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 22, 2004

Kerry/Edwards Campaign Participates Ohio Recount Ohio Democratic Party Seeks Volunteers to Help Recount.

COLUMBUS – Assuring Ohioans receive an accurate count of all votes cast for president has prompted the Democratic Party to participate in the initiative to recount the results of the Nov. 2 presidential election.

“As Senator Kerry stated in his concession speech in Boston, we do not necessarily expect the results of the election to change, however, we believe it necessary to make sure everyone's vote is counted fairly and accurately,” said Dennis White, Ohio Democratic Party chair.

Columbus Attorney Donald McTigue will lead the recount effort on behalf of Ohio Democrats. The party will be recruiting volunteer witnesses to assist in the recount process in all 88 counties.

On Election Day and throughout the month of November, angry Ohio citizens have expressed frustration with long lines, malfunctioning voting machines and undelivered absentee ballots. There have been inconsistencies in the unofficial reports of the election, including an error in one Franklin County precinct that gave George Bush 3,893 more votes than actually cast for him.

The recount can begin after the official results are certified, which likely will be in the first week of December. The Democratic Party wants to be fully prepared to begin a recount immediately.

Volunteers can sign up at the Ohio Democratic Party website: www.ohiodems.org and the party will also accept contributions to help offset the cost of completing a recount.

“We are proud to stand up for Democrats all over the world who have asked us to make sure every vote gets counted. And we want to demonstrate that Ohio can do better in the future to guarantee every voters who wants to vote, has a chance to vote,” White said.

4. Why can't Kerry use some of the 15 million of our cash he has left over?
Am I wrong to suggest he use that cash we worked hard for to help him win?

I'm not bitter but I am certainly broke.

8. Fair enough...we need the DNC to cough it up for us to win this thing!
No more excuses! Let's spend it all if need be to show that Bush stole the votes in Ohio and everywhere else he "won"!

We have been had people and it's time to take back America!

7. This is not the campaign
It's the Ohio Dem party.

They are quoting Kerry but he's not officially involved in this, if at all.

I want it as bad as anyone, and this could be a sign, but it's not the real thing.

The guys are still on the sidelines in this one.

12. Read the Olberman Blog update
Kerry Edwards is being dragged into "participating" in this, kicking and screaming.

My take is that they are bowing to the popular pressure of their base. After all their tough talk, they really have no choice.

14. Maybe so, but out here in Washington,
Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 12:43 AM by kurtyboy
We've got our own recount going on (less than 1/100 of 1% separating the final tally, ninety-three ten-thousandts, to be exact...) and the DEM who lost, Chris Gregoire, is promising a hand recount, even after the machines have done their part. The GOP is fighting even the MANDATORY (by law) recount in federal court, and I think they know there's something big to hide.

Rock on DU, we'll either expose some wrongdoing or, alternatively, show the machines to be near perfect. WIN-WIN, IMO.

Toward a more perfect Union....

Kurt

18. M B F I agree
"But the lead Kerry lawyer on the ground in Ohio, Daniel Hoffheimer, was more cautionary. “What they meant to say is that the Kerry/Edwards campaign will be putting witnesses in the Boards of Elections if a recount is asked for… We are not requesting a recount.”

29. Well my take is that
they are doing what they always meant to do. Just because the media has not been interested does not mean they have been doing nothing. Why should they go to the media, when staying under the radar is better.
We are such creatures of the media; we think that if we don't know it from CNN or wherever, that it does not exist!

crawling and weeping, I don't care, as long as they're in the fight! The timing of this was discussed in another thread, but having this break tonight may give it enough steam to hit MSM and Thanksgiving dinner tables by Thursday! Let's Hope!

21. Most interesting word in the press release...
As Senator Kerry stated in his concession speech in Boston, we do not necessarily expect the results of the election to change...

Is it my imagination, or has every such previous disclaimer simply said "we do not expect the results to change?" It seems to me we might be seeing a subtle shift here.

30. Lawyers know how to use words, it depends on what it is!
That my friend is a ray of hope, a glimmer of we might be able to, but a caution - there are no guarantees. I tell you folks Kerry wants this as badly as we want it for him and our nation.

23. The fly in the ointment.. AFTER certification..
That means that the victory will be "given" to , so the public perception war will begin THERE.. Anything (like actually COUNTING AND VERIFYING the votes) will be presented as "trying to CHANGE the election"..:grr:..

These arbitrary "certification dates" need to be addressed.. Those dates need to be changed across the board so that any disputes and recounts can be done BEFORE certification...

Would the DMV give you your license BEFORE you took the test?
Would the IRS just let you sent them a check for whatever you thought you owed them?
Would the bank dispense money without you entering your account number into the machine?

Just the term "certification" , implies that everything's hunky-dory, and the results are CERTIFIED.. It has an air of finality to it..

Court challenges aside, it sets up a contentious atmosphere, where none should exist,, The candidates got the votes they got.. End of story..Count...THEN certify :grr:

27. what about all the folks who didn't get to vote, because of
long lines and/or intimidation? Will those people be allowed to vote when there is a recount? It seems fair to me, but is there anything in the law that allows for this?
