Rightwing Republicans say boot UN out of US
November 23 2004 at 01:58AM

Los Angelees - A rightwing Republican group on Monday has launched a television campaign calling for the United Nations (UN) to be kicked out of the United States (US), alleging the world body is a "safe harbour" for terrorism.

California-based Move America Forward wants the world body's New York headquarters shut down and its officials expelled from the country because it failed to support the US-led war on Iraq.

"The UN has become an apologist and defender of terrorist organizations and their agents," claims a 60-second commercial, which also makes cites the oil for food scandal involving alleged fraud in Iraqi oil sales.

1. Seems sort of superfluous, don't you think?
I mean, the right has already sidestepped the UN when it didn't get the answer it wanted. What's the fucking point of pulling out?

13. Just a question...
Anyone care to venture a guess as to what that would do to the economy? Does it matter?

6. exactly. and giving up our security council veto?
wouldn't it be lovely to see what the whole world can do if given the chance to vote us into the ground? i'm sure the neo-tards thought of that too.

it's almost funny if it wasn't really happening, isn't it?

Maybe it could go to Paris, and the whole world could become the latest axis of evil. It is the logical extension of neo-con thinking.

7. I think it would be an error. Some how we have to live together
I would think that the UN should do things a little better. Times are not 1945 even if the DOD and Bush seem to fight this war as if we were back then and countries are not the same. Maybe EU should be the vote and not Fr. and England. The world is really not the same as in 45.China and India should be on the vote.

11. Yours is the rational & logical & liberal view
The opposite side of the coin is the right-wing-crazy view --

There is ONLY one way -- and it is THEIR way. The whole world is black & white -- there is no gray. Everything is right or wrong and the UN is wrong.

If these folks have their way -- they will preach their way to the whole world and the ones who "convert" and are "born again" are now good -- and depending how whacked out the religious group is and how much power they have -- the next step is perhaps "re-education camps" or mass slaughter of the unbelievers. I've heard these people talk -- calm, and dignified, no cuss words, but at the same time they are talking about the slaughter of millions if not billions.

When you drive south on I-5 from Seattle to Portland there is a huge sign -- Get US out of the UN. This area is one small haven of the right wingers.

But then it wasn't so long ago that San Francisco would not hold a ceremony for the UN Flag -- because it was in S.F. where the early meetings about the establishment of the UN were held. This special UN flag was accepted in Oakland -- Jack London Square. I was in high school at the time -- and a delegation of high school students went to the ceremony -- many of the big names of the UN were there. It was an impressive ceremony and day.

S.F. is now considered one of the most liberal cities in the US. So perhaps there is hope??????

10. Move American Forward = Republican Howard Kaloogian
Per the FR:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1140479/posts

Dear Friends,

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your dedicated support of my campaign for U.S. Senate.

Certainly I wish last night's election results were different. But we should be proud of the strong grassroots campaign we waged to champion our views, values and beliefs that underscore our commitment to conservative Republican principles.

Last night I congratulated Bill Jones and offered him my full support in his efforts to defeat our liberal extremist U.S. Senator, Barbara Boxer. You should go to his website, http://www.JonesForCalifornia.com, and sign up to help defeat Barbara Boxer. Boxer is bad for California, and her extreme liberal policies hurt our state.

14. Why not, we have alienated ourselves from everything else
It would just signal the beginning of the end for us

In fact, based on how religion is now trying to take over science in this country, I imagine that it will be only a matter of time when we become a second class country

16. Christian Fundamentalists: UN is evil
On web sites like raptureready.com they've openly admitted they have declared war on the United Nations. Their goals are to turn the USA into some awful theocracy, so then we'll be looking more like the 3rd world nation we aspire to be. Personally, I prefer the red parts of the Bible, like the liberal I am.

21. Kofi Annan answered me live on BBC on this subject
many many years ago (possibly 8 years). I will find the tape and try to make a transcript.

I had raised the issue about US not paying its dues and in any other club if a member does not pay its dues, it gets booted out. Not the other way around.

The discussion that ensued showed that the New York ecomony would be serverly hit if the UN moved out - but after all that is part of a Blue State, so it would not matter much to the Repuglicans.

25. re: Rightwing Republicans say boot UN out of US
Since the US has become such a global disgrace, the counter logic would be for the UN to expel the US, relocate UN HQ's to Geneva or the Hague.... then impose sanctions against the US.

works for me...

They have been given so much rope by the electorate, they don't know anything else to do with it but overreach.

This is a loser for them in the public mind. Their base may love it. But the average American will be embarassed by it.
