LOS ANGELES (Reuters)California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, the main democratic candidate in the race to replace Gov. Gray Davis, promised on Sunday to give up direct access to millions of dollars in controversial campaign funds that he had collected using a loophole in the law. ---
Bustamante's use of the campaign finance loophole drew a storm of criticism and a law suit charging he had violated the spirit and possibly the letter of the campaign law.
But he told a rally in Fresno on Sunday that to end the controversy he would send donations above the law's $21,200 limit to a committee opposing Proposition 54, a controversial effort to restrict public agencies from continuing to collecting racial data.
About $3.6 to $3.7 million would be given to the committee, which would use much of the funds to make and air advertisements featuring Bustamante, his campaign manager, Lynn Montgomery said. ---
