Probes, fines part of doing business

By Melissa Allison
Tribune staff reporter
Published September 7, 2003

It's a grim time for Boeing Co.

While Boeing tries to repair the reputation of its rocket-launching business, its defense unit is being investigated by the Pentagon for possible unfair bidding.

The probes have caused distractions for the Chicago-based company at the same time its passenger jetliner business is foundering.

Defense contractors represent eight of the 10 government contractors with the most instances of misconduct and alleged misconduct since 1990, according to the watchdog group Project on Government Oversight.

This summer brought a rash of government actions against defense contractors.

2. Thanks for the link
a couple of months ago I was trying to find that story.

There was just another story about fraud with General Dynamics (another blast from the past regarding defense industry fraud in the 1980s) - but thanks to the bushboy... all systems are ready, set, cheat...

3. Don't sweat it, Boeing!
Chimpy's going to open the piggy bank for another $87 billion for you! No need to worry about actually fulfilling those contracts, the money from the U.S. taxpayer will continue unabated.

6. Just wait, we will be tortured with investigations about the
corrupt and illegal shit that is no doubt going on everyday in this Iraq mess. I mean, just exactly how tight do you imagine the oversite is on how our money is being spent there???

It was widely reported at the start of this farse that "contracts" were being written faster that they could log them.

Just imagine if you will, the opportunity for kickbacks, nonexistant employees on the payrole, misaccounting for inventories, stolen goods, overcharges, you name it. I have NO DOUBT at all that this is the order of the day right now in Iraq, but we won't hear about it for years.
